Storefront: Shopping Cart vs. Quote Cart Settings
The Storefront can sell products two different ways at the same time: products can be purchasable directly through a shopping cart, or placed behind a quote request, where the customer submits a request instead of buying on the spot. Both methods can also be enabled on the same product, letting the customer choose either option.
Which method applies to a given product is controlled by a setting called Default Cart. This setting exists at four different levels of the store, and each level can override the one above it.
How the Settings Hierarchy Works
The Default Cart setting cascades down through four levels, from the most general to the most specific:
- Store settings
- Storefront settings
- Category settings
- Product settings
Each level, starting from Storefront settings downward, can either inherit the setting from the level above it, or override it with its own choice.
Example: If a Category's Default Cart is set to Quote Cart, every product in that category uses Quote Cart by default. If one specific product in that category should instead be purchasable directly, set that product's own Default Cart to Shopping Cart. Only that product switches to Shopping Cart — the rest of the category keeps using Quote Cart.
Note: The "Both carts" option can be set at any level and makes the product both purchasable and available for a quote request at the same time.
1. Store Settings
Sets the default cart type for the entire store. This is the base that every Storefront, category, and product falls back to unless overridden further down the hierarchy.
Where: Settings → Model → Default Cart
Options: Shopping Cart, Quote Cart, Both carts

2. Storefront Settings
Overrides the store default for a specific Storefront market.
Where: Settings → Storefront → Markets → Default Cart
Options: Use store settings (Default), Shopping Cart, Quote Cart, Both carts

3. Category Settings
Overrides the Storefront (or Store) setting for every product inside a category.
Where: Products → Categories → select the three-dot menu (⋮) next to a category → Edit
Options: Use Storefront or Store settings, Shopping Cart, Quote Cart, Both carts

4. Product Settings
Overrides the Category (or Storefront/Store) setting for one individual product.
Where: Products → open the product → Catalog and manufacturer details
Options: Use Category, Storefront or Store settings, Shopping Cart, Quote Cart, Both carts

Summary
Because each level can override the one above it, you can mix and match freely: sell most of your catalog directly while keeping specific categories or individual products behind a quote request, or the other way around. Leave a level on "Use [higher level] settings" to inherit; choose Shopping Cart, Quote Cart, or Both carts to override everything above it, for that level only.
